And Then There Was Diarrhea…

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

The vomiting has given way to diarrhea. Lots of diarrhea. He’s pooped five times since I have been home and about sixteen times total. His butt is developing a rash that makes changing the diaper a delicate dance of trying not to cause too much pain to Ezra.

He is now eating and keeping everything down. He has only vomited once today, and that was after having some orange flavor Pedialyte that probably didn’t taste good to Ezra. Now the only liquids shooting from body is the diarrhea out his butt.

Seeing Ezra Vomit

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Seeing Ezra vomit for the first time was weird. Ezra’s face contorted and became all red. His chest convulsed then everything came pouring out like a fountain hurling water to the ground. It was a splash when the vomit hit the ground and not a splat like spit-up. There was a puddle of vomit and not a drop of spit-up.

After the sixth and seventh time of seeing Ezra vomit the weird wore to worry. Though Ezra was still in a really good mood and didn’t exhibit any signs of pain or displeasure or uneasiness or a temperature, we become more concerned when the chest convulsed and only the bile and foam oozed out.

After -v- called the pediatrician, they talked about poop and pee and other symptoms. The pediatrician said maybe it could be a stomach bug and to try giving Ezra electrolyte water to keep him hydrated and too see if he could keep the electrolyte water in the stomach. We bought some pediatric electrolyte water and gave some pediatric electrolyte water to him in intervals of 15 minutes during then next hour and a half. At the end of the hour and a half, Ezra was sleeping, so we laid him down for bed. Then he vomited the pediatric electrolyte water onto the bed. Then more bile was vomited (with a smile I’ll note). The pediatrician did suggest taking him in the emergency room and have him looked over for it could be some thing more than stomach flu. I thought instantly of some thing like viral meningitis.

We took him to the emergency room, and we were at the hospital for near four hours. During the four hours Ezra vomited breast milk, pediatric electrolyte water, and a little bile about nine times total; Ezra had his vitals taken; he was looked over by a triage person, two nurses, and two doctors; Ezra got many complements on how happy and smiling and pleasant he was even when he had a thermometer shoved up his butt; Ezra was given half an Ondansetron; and nearing the fourth hour a doctor came in to see Ezra again and said that Ezra was in too good of a mood and didn’t have any physical signs other than the vomiting to suggest some thing more than some sort of stomach flu. The doctor told us to go home and let him sleep then give him electrolyte water at 5 minute intervals. And if things got worse to bring him back or take him to our pediatrician.

Now Ezra and Valerie are sleeping. He has not vomited since we got home around 4 in the morning. He has had no symptoms of pain or displeasure. He has been in a good mood. He is now eating milk and doesn’t vomit just poops really slimy and stinky diarrhea.

TOOTH NUMBER #3!!!

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

One of his front upper incisors is now erupting from his gums. All the teething appears to be paying off for Ezra.

It also appears that tooth #4 (the other front upper incisor) is not far from eruption. What this means is soon Ezra could have teeth like a beaver.

Banana Spit

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

Ezra had his first taste of banana today. It was sort of like a banana milk shake without the shake. He seemed to enjoy the mashed up banana mixed with breast milk more than the rice pudding mixed with breast milk because after spitting out one mouth full he’d reach for the bowl and spoon and was happy to let another serving to be shoveled into mouth.

He did appear to eat some of the banana, but most of the banana did ooze from mouth.

The Snottiest Nose EVER!

Friday, January 25th, 2008

The Snottiest Nose EVER! could be a reaction to the teething of teeth pushing through his gums making a very snotty nose The Snottiest Nose EVER! The root cause or causes are not known, but he now has a cold and teething and The Snottiest Nose EVER!

The Snottiest Nose EVER! creates long streams of snot and snot that rolls into baby boogers when it is wiped off.

Ezra has had stuffy noses and very snotty noses. There has been lots of snot sucking during the past like there has been the past couple of days, but there really has never been this almost instant manifestation of snot that coats his nose and upper lip and some times his cheeks. It’s this snot that when wiped rolls in to baby boogers. It is this snot that makes this The Snottiest Nose EVER!

Medicating Ezra

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Ezra is still taking his Zantac 2 times daily, but Ezra is becoming good at spitting out the Zantac as soon as it hits the back of his mouth, so some days he only takes it 1.3 times daily or 1.7 times daily or 1 time daily.

I have tried shooting the Zantac from the syringe to the cheek, roof of mouth, tongue and back of mouth. Back of mouth and roof mouth work best. A roof of mouth injection will still give Ezra enough time to move tongue to dam the Zantac and spit out. Back of the mouth shot of Zantac makes him gag, but he swallows the Zantac, but he is becoming good at controlling the gag reflex, and he can spit it out.

He is becoming very good at working his cheeks and tongue to purge the Zantac from mouth.

Some times I have to surprise Ezra and hope that he won’t be able to think and not swallow and just react and swallow after I shoot the Zantac into his mouth. But it is hard to surprise him because he knows what is about to enter mouth, and he turns and twists neck and lifts his head this way and that way to move mouth further from the end of the syringe that injects the Zantac into mouth.

I am successful more often than not getting Ezra to swallow the Zantac, but there are moments when I thought he had swallowed it only to see a stream of Zantac flows from mouth to cheek to chin to neck.

Teething + Gas = CRYING EZRA!

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

It was a night of Ezra cries. Very loud and very long and very clear crying.

His teething was very intense last night, or (and) he had gas caused by eating rice pudding and sucking down a lot of air while eating rice pudding. He woke three or four times during the night. Or rather I woke three or four times during the night after hearing Ezra’s cries. Ezra could have waken more, but I could have slept through. -v- was the one who worked the night shift of hanging with Ezra. I worked the morning shift of hanging with Ezra.

I am tired. -v- is very tired.

It feels like he is a newborn again waking up every two hours in reaction to some new sensation Ezra is experiencing. This time, however, Ezra is reacting to teeth pushing through his gums for the first time, or (and) lots of gas.

EZ-O’s Crib

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Yo. EZ-O moved into his own crib this weekend! Awwww yeah! He’s livin’ large now. His spot is the best place in the whole house for shizzle.

Yes, Ezra made the move from the porta-crib to his real, sturdy comfortable crib this weekend.

It all happened so quickly, at least according to Kalab. However, I’ve been working up to this for weeks. It just happened abruptly this weekend because I woke up on Saturday night 4 times before 3am-  Ezra was alternately snoring and talking in his sleep, or would lose his pacifier and wake up and decide he wanted a snack - and by 2:30am felt that he had to be moved right then and there.

I have personally been trying since Grandma O left to only get up once to feed Ezra and otherwise have been trying to get him to soothe himself back to sleep when he wakes up(Kalab was just not informed of this). This is hard to do when he’s in the room with you and every move he makes causes you to wake up. And I think it’s hard on him as well - I’ve read that your baby can smell your milk from up to 2 or 3 feet away, so when they wake up and smell the milk, they probably feel like they might as well get some. Kind of like if you’re a coffee drinker, the smell of coffee brewing can wake you up and get you out of bed.

The other reason for the move is that I had this thought a week or so ago that took hold and wouldn’t leave me alone -  part of the reason he was so stuffy and snoring was because he was too close to the floor and the level of the heat vent, in front of which both our cats like to nap . So I imagined that he was inhaling a huge amount of dusty, dirty, cat-dander-filled air and this was causing him to sleep badly, and would probably lead him to develop allergies or asthma or some other lung problems later in life. This may or may not be true, but at 2:30am on Sunday this was all I could think about and this is what actually sparked the big move to Ezra’s big crib this weekend.

He seems to like his crib, and I think he’s OK with being in his room alone. Although he has been putting up something of a fuss at night, that could be attributed more to his teething - another of life’s abrupt changes he’s got to go through.

Big Boy Bed

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

It has been a week of change for Ezra. First Ezra got in the high chair and new what it was like to be high. Then Ezra ate rice pudding as his first solid food. Then the location where Ezra’s bath tub is placed during Ezra’s baths was moved from the kitchen sink to the tub. THEN we began to try to get Ezra to sleep through the night to begin a sleeping schedule for Ezra. AND last night another change for Ezra: he began sleeping in his own big boy room.

Yes, big boy Ezra is now going to sleep in his own big boy room and big boy bed. It was a change that was planned to occur in a couple of weeks because we didn’t want all this change to occur in such a short span of time. We wanted to wait for Ezra to adjust to the change of seating, eating, bathing, and sleeping time. But last night -v- moved Ezra from the travel crib in our room into the crib in his big boy room after a night of Ezra talking in his sleeping and waking up at two and three and wanting to talk to very tired parents.

Pain In The Back

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

Big boy Ezra is causing big back pain and making me feel like an old man.

No longer can I carry him around with one arm without moaning or complaining about my back at least once. When I see him in his bed, I think twice about how I am going to reach down over the a rails and lift Ezra out (with my back). When we are on the play mat no longer do I lift him from the floor by standing with him secured by one arm and chest, nor do I stand and reach down with back and lift him up from play mat with back because now I lift with legs.

Today -v-, Ezra and I went shopping. I was the one walking around with Ezra strapped to chest for an hour and a half. And now I am sitting down thinking of how we are getting old and about my sore back.

More Food?

Friday, January 18th, 2008

In Ezra’s case, more teeth does not mean eating more food. In fact, it’s sort of the opposite. He had a rough day with the teething, and went to bed before we could try feeding him again. Maybe tomorrow will bring less teething pain and more eating for Ezra.

Kalab got in on the action and fun of feeding Ezra yesterday. I wish I had taken video of it, but actually, it was pretty much the same as this video:

Tooth #2

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Another tooth eruption has occurred. A second tooth is growing from gums right next to Tooth #1.

This is both exciting and tiring. Exciting because it’s exciting to see Ezra grow in so many ways. Tiring because the other tooth has pushed Ezra over his pain threshold making him a more fussy Ezra all day and all night.

Ezra Dresses Like A Baby

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

-v- was telling me yesterday after returning from daycare details about daycare I have noticed too (now that she mentioned it): the other kids at daycare wear pants and shirts with socks and shoes while Ezra wears a baby body suit most of the time.

The baby body suit is the type of outfit babies wear when sleeping or lounging around the house. I equate it to a babies version of sweats and a sweater, but with 70’s body suit twist.

The baby body suit is one piece like a onesie but is thicker and has longer sleeves and leggings that have feet on the end, so Ezra can have warm feet and not wear socks. The one piece outfit also helps Ezra’s body heat to remain trapped and circulate through out the baby body suit for it is one piece of clothing. If Ezra needs a change of diaper, the baby body suit is easier to access than pants with socks with maybe a onesie underneath. The body suit is great for sleeping, and in my mind it is great for daycare too.

Until -v- mentioned that all the other kids are wearing ‘real’ cloths like button up shirts, pants, socks and shoes (even thought they don’t walk) at daycare, I didn’t care. After she mentioned the kids not wearing baby body suits my mind began to remember the same details I have noticed when dropping Ezra off in the mornings.

Most of the kids are older, but not by much, so now we feel Ezra shouldn’t be dressed in his baby body suits for daycare. Ezra needs to become part of the system like everyone else and the sooner he becomes adjusted to wearing shoes and socks and pants and shirts and not wearing the baby body suit then the sooner we can begin to show him how to dress for the system. I would hate for Ezra to want to wear body suits with feet on the legs and cute animals on his feet forever.

-v- Is Tooth Obessesed

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

-v- has become obsessed with Ezra’s tooth. A tooth that can now be seen with out -v- trying get Ezra to open his mouth and move and hold his tongue away from his gums, so she can stare at the tooth. A tooth that when first discovered by -v- could only be seen with a mother’s focus and attention.

-v-’s enthusiasm for the tooth is infectious. Now I am looking for the tooth. A tooth now seen with ease when Ezra opens his mouth and moves is tongue.

mmm…food

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Ezra had his first taste of a food that is not breastmilk yesterday; it’s still unknown whether or not he enjoyed it.

I followed all the directions in all the baby feeding guidance - 1TB of rice cereal mixed with 3-4TB of breastmilk to produce a really liquidey milky rice broth. Yum…? Most of it ended up on the bib, on his shirt, on his face, and on the high chair. But it was fun for me! I had to try hard not to laugh when he would spit out everything I just put in, because I read somewhere that if you laugh when he makes messes while eating, he’ll be more likely to do it every time he eats because babies like to make you laugh. It was funny though. You can see for yourself, maybe tomorrow when I post part of the video Kalab made of the event.
